Over the years, the school has hosted numerous notable individuals, including the renowned author of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," Lewis Carroll. However, on an international scale, this location is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of rugby, thanks to a moment of spontaneous rule-breaking by one of its students, William Webb Ellis, during a football game.
The school, known for its expansive grounds, offers an ideal setting for our summer programme, ensuring safety, a convenient location, and access to excellent facilities.

The School
Rugby School was founded in 1567 by Lawrence Sheriff, a spice purveyor to Queen Elizabeth I. Since the time of Thomas Arnold, the School has embraced a holistic model, integrating academic, artistic, spiritual and sporting pursuits into an indivisible whole.
Rugby’s rich history is reflected in the School’s monuments and buildings. Notably, in 1823, William Webb Ellis, a student, famously disregarded the rules of football by catching the ball and running with it in his arms, thus creating the game of rugby football. As the birthplace of the game, in 2023 the School marked the 200th anniversary of rugby football with a range of prestigious events that attracted a global audience.
Students will reside and learn within the very heart of Rugby School - the original School House building and the iconic quad classrooms where many Rugbean scholars have walked before them.
