The programme:

Motivating first step The aim of the programme for children is to give them an early advantage for the rest of their lives: a love of the English language at an age when it can make a real difference, not only for the great motivation factor but the enhanced capacity to absorb the language in the earlier years.

Contextualising language – Storytelling The teacher tells a story, graded to the language level of the students. The story involves participation from the students. Storytelling is a memorable, engaging and realistic way for children to be exposed to and experience the language.

Listening and reading

Receptive skills development A reading or listening lesson follows that uses the language and theme from the story, giving students practice with this lexis.

Song analysis workshop A song based on the story’s theme allows students to interact with the language in yet another way. Songs offer cultural enrichment, aid memorisation and use language in a genuinely communicative way. Students are exposed to the lyrics of the song which they study and sing.

Individual learning - project

Here students are writing their own magazine about themselves using the language or theme from the day’s story. This helps them personalise the language and make it relevant to their own lives.

Arts and crafts

To end the lessons, students have the chance to make or do something connected to the story. This is still a very communicative lesson as students have to follow instructions in English, ask for different things from the teacher and their peers. Although the lesson is called arts and crafts, it includes a variety of other active activities such as science experiments and cooking.
