Swindon is home to Brunel's railway works that have been restored and remain an integral part of the town's heritage. The historic old town still largely exists and is complemented by modern cultural and entertainment complexes, including a pedestrianised shopping street and a retail outlet with excellent facilities. Just outside Swindon, there are picturesque villages to explore.

One of OISE's longest running summer centres, Swindon is located approximately 1 hour from London by train. Situated in the county of Wiltshire, this old market town was the centre of development of the railways in the area.

The curriculum develops language knowledge, confidence and fluency and has the scope to explore a wide range of academic and linguistic areas of interest such as Critical Thinking, Business, Drama and Creative Writing. Students explore areas of interpersonal skills and inter-cultural awareness as well as developing a learning autonomy.

The programme

Beyond traditional language course provision; as well as improving their English students can expect to develop their life skills, work on projects and learn how to become more effective and autonomous learners

English Language lesson

These lessons cover the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing and include controlled practice in language structures and lexis development to achieve a good command of grammar structures and vocabulary.

Life Skills lessons and Learning Strategies

Each lesson is linked thematically to the English lesson which precedes it. The lessons cover areas such as study skills, time-management and being self confident.

Fluency Workshop

30 minutes of fluency activities which encourage the students to overcome inhibitions.

Project lessons

The projects encourage autonomous learning, teamwork and completion of a task (such as a presentation, a video, a newspaper) and cover areas such as journalism, theatre skills and debates.

Measuring progress

Each student keeps a Learner Portfolio to encourage learning skills, self-assessment and reflection. Individual coaching sessions allow students to monitor and improve their performance.

The full day of learning continues after lessons. Residential students have organised cultural and recreational activities during the evening at the school. Homestay students return to their host family where they have the opportunity to participate in family life.
