OISE Dawlish – Ages 13 -17

Devon is home to some of the UK’s finest beaches and traditional seaside resorts, of which Dawlish, on the south coast of the county, is no exception. Situated 300km south west of London, this small but lively town has played host to many happy holiday makers over the years.

With a capacity limited to 48 students, OISE Dawlish has a warm family atmosphere which makes it perfect for those who are visiting England for the first time. The school itself is nestled in picture-perfect grounds complete with a trickling stream. Due to its exclusive seaside location, the leisure programme has been specially tailored to include activities on the beach – always a popular option!

THE SCHOOL

OISE Dawlish is located in the centre of this pretty Devon seaside resort, close to the beach.

With a capacity limited to 48 students, OISE Dawlish has a warm family atmosphere which makes it perfect for those who are visiting England for the first time. The school itself is nestled in picture-perfect grounds complete with a trickling stream.

 

COURSE - THE EXTENDED SUMMER SCHOOL CURRICULUM

An Extended summer curriculum in a choice of summer schools across England. The Extended curriculum goes beyond language knowledge, confidence and fluency and explores a wide range of academic subjects such as History, Geography, Natural Sciences and Literature. Students explore areas of interpersonal skills and inter-cultural awareness as well as developing a learning autonomy.

 

THE PROGRAMME

The Extended curriculum goes beyond the traditional summer curriculum; as well as improving their English, students can expect to widen their subject knowledge in areas such History, Geography, Law and Science.

English Language lesson

These lessons cover the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing and include controlled practice in language structures and lexis development to achieve a good command of grammar structures and vocabulary.

Life Skills and Learning Strategies Each lesson is linked thematically to the English lesson which precedes it. The lessons cover areas such as study skills, time-management and being self confident.

Project lesson

The projects encourage autonomous learning, teamwork and completion of a task (such as a presentation, a video, a newspaper) and cover areas such as journalism, theatre skills and debates.

Subject lesson

Students study a subject such as Geography, Natural Science, Politics, Cultural Awareness, British History.

Measuring progress

Each student keeps a Learner Portfolio to encourage learning skills, self-assessment and reflection. Individual coaching sessions allow students to monitor and improve their performance.

Exam preparation

FCE and CAE Students wishing to prepare for the FCE or CAE exam study exam techniques and strategies and receive regular individualised feedback on progress and target specific areas in speaking, reading, writing, listening and grammar for improvement. The timetable includes real-time practice examinations and coaching in language and examination skills.

The full day of learning continues after lessons. Residential students have organised cultural and recreational activities during the evening at the school. Homestay students return to their host family where they have the opportunity to participate in family life.

ARRIVALS 

The designated airports for Dawlish are London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Bristol. Our dedicated and experienced meet and greet teams look after the students and ensure their safe onward transfer.

To benefit from the free transfer service students should arrive 10.00 - 19.00 on Sundays and depart 12.00-19.00 on Saturdays. Outside these times private transfers can be organised at a supplement.

The majority of students arriving in London will be taken to our nearby Welcome Lounge to join with other students for their school and then travel together to Dawlish. Whilst at the welcome lounge they can relax in a secure environment and enjoy games, activities and refreshments.

Students using Bristol Airport travel directly to and from Dawlish.

 

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation is with host families living in Dawlish and Teignmouth which are only 4km apart. Students staying in Dawlish are all within walking distance of the school. Students in Teignmouth will have a five minutes bus or train journey along the seafront to and from school. All host families are thoroughly inspected and their credentials checked. There will be no other student of the same mother tongue in the house.

 

CULTURAL PROGRAMME

One evening per week there will be a social activity for all students. Examples include film nights, barbecues, talent shows, art, quizzes, and bowling. Excursions include places of historic or architectural interest such as the Barbican Centre in Plymouth, an outing to the National Marine Aquarium or a visit to the city of Exeter. Sundays are spent with host families.
