Law is the perfect course for the barristers, solicitors and judges of tomorrow. This course will broaden students’ understanding of key legal concepts, as well as enhancing their ability to use legal argumentation in English. During the course, students will discover how law and lawyers function in different legal fields, and analyse a range of fundamental legal theories through interesting and engaging case studies. Students will have the unique opportunity to experience the English judicial system through our Academic Excursion to a real-life working court room.

Minimum Level of English required for this course: Intermediate and above.

THE LOCATION

Cambridge College Summer School takes place at Clare College, The University of Cambridge. Clare College was founded in 1326 and is the university’s second oldest remaining college at the University of Cambridge. The picturesque campus is located on the banks of the River Cam and just 15 minutes from the centre of Cambridge. Students will take the iconic walk across the River Cam as they travel between Memorial Court and Old Court throughout the programme. The programme offers students the opportunity to live and study in the heart of Cambridge, providing a truly inspiring experience

These summer courses are specifically designed for international students aged between 15 and 17 years of age. Our courses teach English through the study of specific academic subjects and prepare students for further study or professional life in their chosen field. These English language courses include a dynamic range of different subject specialities, designed to improve our students’ English language skills, as well as to prepare them for life at a leading English speaking University. Our summer courses combine studying English Through Academic Subjects with an engaging social programme, all within the inspiring settings of Cambridge University.

THE COLLEGE

Clare College Clare College is located on the banks of the River Cam, just a short walk from the centre of Cambridge. With views of King’s College and Queen’s College, the location is one of the most iconic in the city.

 

ACCOMMODATION

All students are accommodated on-campus in twin en-suite study rooms. Rooms are arranged in traditional staircases, with separate accommodation for male and female students. Meals are provided in the traditional buttery, or the modern Garden Room. Our team of College Mentors also live on-campus to provide pastoral support throughout your stay.

 

WELFARE

Studying away from home can be exciting and daunting, and students will face new experiences socially and academically. Cambridge College Summer School offers a safe and secure environment for students to study and relax in. We have 1 member of staff to every 6 students and our dedicated staff team are available 24 hours a day to assist with any needs that they might have during their stay with us. The balance of support, supervision and mentoring from our staff ensures that all college students make the most of their summer college experience. Summer Boarding Courses is committed to the safeguarding and protection of all students in our care. We pride ourselves on offering the best possible support to students, confirmed by an official Area of Strength in The Care of Under 18s, and Care of Students by the British Council accreditation scheme.

Time to Shine 

Effective presentation skills are a fundamental part of a lawyer’s skills repertoire, so their development is a central focus of our Law Time to Shine programme. During the course, students will put their newfound understanding of Law into practice and work together to develop a case for the defence, or prosecution, in preparation for a mock legal trial. This project will culminate in a full legal trial simulation, including judges, lawyers, barristers, prosecutors and defendants.

By developing students’ understanding of Law, their confidence in public speaking and their ability to work effectively as part of a team, our Law course is the first step towards a successful future degree in the subject. Law is an ideal course for students wishing to pursue law as a career or at university, and provides an in-depth introduction to the legal world, enabling students to develop their knowledge and understanding of key legal concepts. Students will learn how argument is best deduced and applied in both theoretical and practical case studies, and given the opportunity to simulate the real duties and responsibilities of a practising lawyer.

In a rapidly changing world, it has never been more important for students to develop their soft skills, practical skills and entrepreneurial mindset, in addition to their academic development, in order to get ahead. Summer Boarding Courses are working in cooperation with EtonX, a cutting-edge future skills online learning platform, from Eton College, designed for teenagers aged 13 – 17 with a minimum B2 level of English.

How are the courses developed?
Course Directors from Eton College have created a series of short skills development courses which reflect Eton’s teaching ethos and include activities implemented at Eton College in tutorials, lessons and extra-curricular activities. Each interactive self-directed course can be implemented alongside your son or daughter’s studies before attending an SBC summer school as great preparation or after attending an SBC summer school as a continuation of their summer education.
How long will it take to complete? T
here are 7 units that students can work through at their own pace but we recommend little and often. They will have access to around 7 – 10 hours of highly engaging and interactive learning materials.
When do the EtonX courses have to be completed by?
All courses must be completed by December 2020. EtonX courses are also available from Summer Boarding Courses as an individual purchase, without needing to enrol on a summer school course. Contact us to enquire about a special package.

At the end of each 2-week stay, we have a formal Dinner and Graduation Ceremony to celebrate the achievements of our students. This is a fantastic opportunity to look back on the success of the course, both academic and social and the successes that are sure to come in the future.
