Blackrock – Dublin – Ages 11-15

Blackrock is a suburb of Dublin. It is a largely residential area located 8km south of the city centre. A fashionable seaside resort in the eighteenth century, the town gets its name from the black rock that lies off-shore and once marked the city limits. An ancient Celtic Cross still stands on the main street.

Blackrock College, including Willow Park, is a large educational complex. It has extensive wooded parklands and playing fields of some 64 acres, with a magnificent view of Dublin Bay.

The college is located beside Booterstown DART station and the city centre is only a 10 minute train journey or a 15 minute bus ride away.

LOCATION

Blackrock is a suburb of Dublin. It is a largely residential area located 8km south of the city centre. A fashionable seaside resort in
the eighteenth century, the town gets its name from the black rock that lies off-shore and once marked the city limits. An ancient Celtic Cross still stands on the main street.

Blackrock College, including Willow Park, run by the Holy Ghost Fathers, is a large educational complex. It has extensive wooded
parklands and playing fields of some 64 acres, with a magnificent view of Dublin Bay. The school was originally opened in 1860. Part of this large complex includes ‘The Castle’, which is an historical building formerly called Williamstown Castle, built in 1780.

The college is located beside Booterstown DART station and the city centre is only a 10 minute train journey or a 15 minute bus ride away.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMME

There are 23 comfortable, modern and spacious classrooms available in the college for the students. Classes are
available at all levels from Elementary (A1) to Advanced (C1). Classes for junior students will have a maximum of 15 students, but you can expect an average of 13 students per class.

Each lesson is 45 minutes in duration and the standard programme for junior students is 15 hours per week. Class
times are divided so that students receive lessons from more than one teacher, two per day allowing them the benefit of more than one voice and teaching style and having a team of teachers liaise on their learning paths.

ACCOMMODATION

Twin, triple and four bedded rooms are available at the college. Showers and toilets are situated on each floor.
Multi-bedded rooms are also available for younger students.

Students attending this College can also choose to stay with a host family. All the families are inspected and carefully selected by the Accommodation Officer. Accommodation is arranged on a full board basis. Students staying with host families share a room with a student of similar age and different nationality where possible.

STUDENT WELFARE

The welfare of our students is of paramount importance to us and we offer a high standard of care and supervision to all our students. The school provides nominated staff members to act as guardians to their individual students that travel without group leaders. It is very important  that students remain happy and healthy throughout their stay.  The Management,  along with the teachers and the activity leaders will ensure that all students receive the best possible care and attention so as to maximize their experience during their study holiday.

ACTIVITIES AND EXCURSIONS

The programme in this college offers a very comprehensive cultural, sports and evening programme.
Included are two half day cultural excursions to local galleries, museums and other visitor attractions and one full
day excursion per week to cities and places of cultural importance around Ireland. All excursions are by private
coach. The activity programme provides young students with an opportunity to absorb some of Ireland’s rich heritage in a fun and relaxed way.

A residential evening activity programme rounds off each day and includes: discos, Irish nights (Ceili), karaoke, talent nights and treasure hunts ensuring that each student is busy from breakfast to bedtime.
