Aldenham School – Hertfordshire – Ages 10-17

Aldenham School was founded more than 400 years ago and stands its original site in more than 110 acres of Hertfordshire countryside, just to the north west of London. Queen Elizabeth I gave permission for the school to be built and the Foundation Stone was laid in 1597. At this school ‘old tradition’ is mixed with the best modern facilities.

It’s the best centre for students who enjoy an old English school and want a London location as it is only 30 minutes to central London.

More Information

To ensure host families / residential staff (and students) are not unduly inconvenienced the latest scheduled arrival time at an airport should be no later than 21:00 and the earliest scheduled departure from an airport should be no earlier than 10:00. All students are met at the flight arrival gate on arrival. Children and juniors are supervised at all times.

These transfers are by shared coaches, which on arrival days leave the airport between 09:00 and 17:00 so choose your flight time to match. On departure days your return flight must leave between 10.00 and 18.00.

All students using transfer service are met at the flight arrival gate on arrival, are taken to check in and security on departure and are supervised by the school's own airport staff at all times.

For shared transfers a waiting time of up to 3 hours is possible, but always supervised by the school's staff. Students aged 15 and under must use the school's transfer service or be accompanied by a responsible adult aged 18 years or older. If not using the school's transfer service, you must provide us with details of your travel arrangements to/from the centre before the course starts and these arrangements must meet teh school's safeguarding requirements. For children who travel as Unaccompanied Minors on airlines we provide an extra service at the airport on arrival and departure - Supplement £35 per person. Please note that if you book a shared transfer and then your flight time means that a shared transfer is not possible we will arrange a taxi transfer and you will have to pay the extra cost.  If it is not possible for the school to operate a shared transfer to/from any airport on any particular day then we will arrange taxi transfers and you will be asked to pay the extra cost. We will notify you of this before your arrival in the UK.

 29 June - 13 July - 20 July - 27 July - 03 August (Mondays)

Superbly located for London and its airports. The Thameslink rail service operates from nearby Radlett station (5 minute drive) to St Pancras. Trains run every 20 minutes and the journey time is 20-25 minutes to London

Students are divided by age groups:

  • 10 to 14
  • 15 to 17

Good standard of residential accommodation - Large sports hall - Traditional ‘fives’ courts - All weather astro turf pitch - Tennis courts - Extensive playing fields - Wi-Fi - Student common rooms - Theatre

Separate accommodation is provided for girls and boys; twin and multi-bedded rooms encourage students to make friends from other nationalities. All of the accommodation houses are centrally located around the school. Laundry is organised for the students in the houses by the housekeepers. Students are supervised in the accommodation blocks and there is a "houseperson" on duty at all times to look after the students' welfare.

All meals are served in the impressive ‘olde worlde’ dining room with portraits of past headmasters looking down on the students from the walls. There is a wide choice of fresh food providing the necessary well-balanced and healthy diet. The school can cater for all special food needs including vegetarian, halal etc.

Students receive 3 hours actual teaching per day, total 15 hours per week. Residential Courses have morning lessons and afternoon sports and activities.  All members of a group must have the same course of lessons.

The safety of  junior students is our prime concern. We ensure that they are always under the supervision of the school's trained staff whether in class or participating in activities. Home-stay junior students are placed in experienced families.  Each centre has a junior liaison officer responsible for overall supervision.   Social Club excursion tickets are sold to junior students aged 15 and under on the condition that they agree to stay with the staff escort, group leader or another responsible adult at all times.  For those kids residing with families, after full day coach trips we arrange for students to leave the coach close to their families and after evening activities. Activity Leaders will ensure that their students get home safely.

NOTE: Please note that children aged 10 and 11 must have a Residential Course.

Students taking a Residential Course need only bring their personal spending money - everything else is included. Student's pocket money may be deposited with the centre either before or on arrival. Notice of 2 days must be given when large amounts of pocket money are required.

All Residential courses and Residential Home-stay courses include a comprehensive Activity Programme of excursions, sports and activities. The programmes are run by the resident Activity Leaders and their teams. The school reserves the right to amend the activity programme according to prevailing circumstances and to substitute one activity for another. The replacement will be of equal or greater value. The school also reserves the right to change the order of activities . Tickets are non-transferable. Booking for an activity programme or additional trips must normally be for the complete group. We cannot guarantee a choice of Social Club activities for reservations made after April 15th.
