More Information

Known as the gateway to Europe, Folkestone is a traditional seaside town in Kent on the south east coast of England, with a sunny climate, fine beaches and friendly people. Frequented by internationally acclaimed author HG Wells, who is celebrated every year in the town, Folkestone also plays host to a variety of festivals and attractions including Norman churches, the Battle of Britain monument and the annual Harbour Festival. The school itself is a grand Edwardian building situated in the exclusive west end of Folkestone.

The natural coastline and the refreshing sea breeze at Folkestone make it the ideal choice for learners wanting to study away from the distractions of larger towns. The quaint sloping streets towards the harbour feature shops and cafés, and vantage points offer uncompromised views of the seascape. The county of Kent with its beautiful countryside is home to Canterbury, famous for the Cathedral and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. OISE Folkestone is situated to the west of the town, bordering a quiet park with plenty of outdoor space.

The school is staffed by a select group of committed teachers with a great deal of experience in their field. All classrooms are housed in the same building, generating a familial atmosphere. Tuition takes place in OISE’s signature small groups of up to eight students to benefit from both a strong group dynamic as well as a great deal of individual attention.

Academic subject knowledge Students develop a greater understanding of subjects that are key for work and life in the 21st century including English Literature, the performing arts, Geography, History, Science, and Politics.

English language in use Students look at content in English by reading a text or watching a video. They will then analyse its language features, and practise using them in engaging, meaningful spoken or written tasks.

Creative project

Students have the opportunity to develop their ability to think creatively, work creatively and collaboratively with others to share their innovative ideas through different presentation styles such as pecha kucha, video reportage, or a blog.

Measuring progress

Each student keeps a Learner Portfolio to encourage learning skills, self-assessment and reflection. Individual coaching sessions allow students to monitor and improve their performance.

Cultural awareness & educational field trip

Students, through an inquiry approach, develop skills for understanding aspects of culture. Students will research a place to visit and, after doing so, they will present their findings and contrast them with their own culture.

Every week, leisure activities complete the course programme of the language stay. During their language stay students have the opportunity to spend a Saturday in London, Canterbury or Brighton. During the week, relaxation evenings are organised. All the students then get together, for example, for a dance or a barbecue.

Host families take care of the well-being of the learner. They welcome the student into their home and share meals and talk in English. The distance from the host family to the school is usually covered on foot. On the first day the family will take the student to and from the school so they are familiar with the journey. If public transport is required, the student will receive the required tickets.

The designated airports for Folkestone are London Heathrow and London Gatwick. Our dedicated and experienced meet and greet teams look after the students and ensure their safe onward transfer.
To benefit from the free transfer service students should arrive 10.00 - 19.00 on Sundays and depart 12.00-19.00 on Saturdays. Outside these times private transfers can be organised at a supplement.

Students using London Heathrow are often taken to our nearby Welcome Lounge to join with other students for their school. Whilst at the welcome lounge they can relax in a secure environment and enjoy games, activities and refreshments. Students using Gatwick Airport will be driven directly to and from Folkestone
